The boiling spots

The boiling pots threatening global peace.

There are boiling pots in our region threatening world peace. The vested interests are adamant not to let these flames die down, to maintain their nuisance value and say, internationally and regionally. Their total disregards for human miseries is abundantly clear from their words and deeds.

Since the inception of Pakistan's relations with Afghanistan  have never been good neighbourly. This uneasy truce has waves of cold and hot but never touch normality.  In the Initial days of Pakistan an attempt was made to normalise relations that resulted in Sardar Abur Rab Nishtar and Sardar Hashim accord. But it never saw the light of the day.  It is said that the agreement was sabotaged by Liaquat Ali and khaliquzzaman. The two imported sinister dictators.

Every wound inflicted on Abdal land, if traced back will have its roots in Durand line. This contentious issue was left behind by Britishers. To  keep afghanistan engaged or bring it to knees to accept it as an international border tricks of all kinds have been played.

Pakistan hardly miss a a chance to raise the issue of  Durand Line. They are so myopic politically and diplomatically to realise that Durand line was drawn when even the concept of Pakistan was not born. It was a bilateral issue between British and Afghans and they have to solve it. The line is so thorny in intra Afghan circles that the Afghans have kept this issue for themselves  to decide, not even their government has the right to solve on its own. It was arrogance of British and placidity of Indian congress. Burma, Srilanka, Maldeep, Bhutan, Nepal all were given independence except our region.

After that no serious attempt was made. The relations turned very sour during Bhutto time when he re-initiated the old English forward policy and went on an undiplomatic and abusive campaign against Sardar Daud. To destabilise Afghanistan Mr. Bhutto started an internal revolt to topple Daud. Gulbadin and Ahmad shah Masood were the first to be recruited.

Zia carried it forward and naked military was started in Afghanistan. It is ridiculous notion being forwarded by the Pakistani journalist and government that USSR invasion was the main reason for the on going war . Initially it was the direct intervention by Pakistan and USA just under the belly of USSR to prompt the Russian invasion. If USA could not tolerate Russian presence in its backyard, how could they expect Russian to sit fingers crossed and watch military intervention under its belly.

ISI was not only involved in Afghanistan but Kashmir, Assam, East Punjab, Bombay, USSR and even China. Zia had was obsessed  about Afghanistan  to provide strategic depth to Pakistan. To re establish his paternal country, Khalistan was his obsession. At one stage he decided to lead the insurgency in East Punjab himself. (ref. Gen Rahman Gul). When Rajiv was asked about Khalistan in Islam Abad, he said yes Khalistan was there but the capital was Lahore.

The same policy is being continued till today. Afghanistan has been totally ruined and Pakistan   viability as a state is in serious doubt. Zia had no luck to see his dreams come true. He was brought down by the load of his sins. Afghan war is the only one where small parties have dragged in big powers.

Pakistan being a surrogate state was receiving a lot of overt and covert international perks and was accorded the non -NATO status. The relation with US were exceptionally good.  The two dictator were cronies of US and it was more easy for USA to deal with  individuals rather than institutions. No one knew what is happening behind the scene. Now the facts are leaking that Zia rented out the sovereignty of the land and Musharaf sold the air space. It makes me laugh that when some of us talk of sovereign air space on a rentier land.

Recently the relations between the countries turned worst. A spokesman of Pakistan declared the Durand line as international border. Afghans hit back in the same vain.  Allegations and counter allegations have reached new heights.

The killings of ISAF soldiers by Afghan national army have increased in intensity and frequency. Individuals reaction to foreign forces could be one of the reason but ISI manipulation behind the scene cannot be excluded categorically.  It seems properly thought out policy and precisely executed venture.
Pakistan ISI has a reputation in such covert operations and subversive activities. The  difficult task for kabul and other major power is who should they talk to in Pakistan? Where is the nucleus of power and how strong is that nucleus? Has it control over the rabid ISI and sectarian private armies. The nucleus of power is made of heterogeneous elements derived from a broad band that includes professional soldiers and loosely  knitted terrorists sectarian organisation. A huge chunk of civilian politicians derives it's life from the game of death.

Civilian government, army establishment , ISI and it's associated institutions, sectarian parties and the parties on the right of the centre all have their stake . The stake of the stakeholder may vary but none is ready to surrender it. They have to be taken on board and dragged to the negotiating table otherwise peace will remain a dream. Peace move in Afghanistan and KPK cannot be successful unless the little thorny devils cash their stake.

Afghanistan has always been a focus of attraction for alien aggressors because of its geo strategical location. It is a hub to reach  India, china, central asian states and Russian federation. Economically it is a corridor to the untapped resources of central Asia and gateway to India. Its own natural resources are still untapped.

At the moment it may not be a golden sparrow for industrial nations but if peace prevails it can be in the future if the resources are tapped on both sides of Durand.. The boiling pot of Afghanistan is essential for their  international relevance.

Those who realise the importance of peace for the evolution of humanity are all holding their breath that peace is not derailed. Mr. Asfandiyar khan visit to Kabul along with a very strong entourage might be a step in this direction. But one should not forget that unless the voice and endeavours are the same in Quetta, Peshawar, Kabul and Qandahar the international fraternity will neither give it due importance, nor their struggle will bear the desired fruit. Our house must be in order and having one agenda peace to stimulate international interest and avoid future anarchy.

Baluchistan:
It is another hot spot. It is unfortunate that the Pakistani establishment and Baluch aspirations are completely out of frequency with each other. Baluch are demanding the acceptance of Baluch as a nation with national dignity and respect. They want to the master of their own destiny, land and history. Pakistan packages as political bribery. Pakistan is offering concessions in return for national heritage that is hurting Baluch more. They have been cheated and bitten several time by Islam Abad. They neither trust them nor believe that they have the strength of character to honour to put in practice what they say?

Mr. Akhar Mengal was right to show his disappointment about Pakhtun but the alternative he has chosen is unnatural. We are natural allies and cousins and victim of the same devilish mental make up.
In another dilemma for Baluch that those who are talking to them is not the real party to deliver, the reigns of power are held by some one else. They want to talk to GHQ and the allied agencies in international forum. In Pakistan there is long history of deception. Baluch may be a small nation but not smaller than Estonia that challenged red army.

Karachi.
That is another foul smelling boiling pot where a havoc is being played with Pakhtuns. The target killing, sectarian clashes, ethnic disharmony, criminal Ganges war if traced back goes to the days of Ayub. The things were cooking but there was strong lid to contain it. During Mr. Bhutto days the foul smell started leaking. I personally feel that no doubt there are many players but MQM hold on the masses cannot be ignored. They have the key to the peace and their head masterly control can deliver peace this unlucky city once, the citadel of peace. I am really perplexed and confused that why the writ of Pakistan government and death travel together as if they are twin brothers? FATA, Swat and norther areas are the glaring examples

The dream that gone yellow

                                   The dream that gone yellow?

If historical facts, documentary proofs and the unthinkable sacrifices of the people are momentarily forgotten and out of goodwill it is accepted that Pakistan is the result of  Dr. Iqbal dream that was turned in to reality by Mr. Jinnah and his steno. This is being drilled in our minds for the last 66 years, better accept it.

The claim was to avoid subjugation and exploitation of the biggest minority, the Muslims by the larger Hindu majority. The fear was discrimination but our leaders failed to take precautionary measures  that the new country is free of intra Muslims discrimination and prejudices. But unfortunately it became the state policy.

It was advocated that muslims should have a home where they can lead their lives according to their religious beliefs and protect their economical;7, political and social
interests  without fear of the Hindu majority. The salient characters of the state will be a secular, democraticK  and multinational state. The slogan was so attractive that bengali too were tempted to join, though they were not included in the original plan.

Who could imagine that the dream of Iqbal and its realisation by Mr. Jinnah will become the beginning of a long painful journey of the new nation of the purists ruled by the purist?, The dream will remain a dream with no realisation or end. It will be an agonising, traumatic journey with no end insight. There was no organisation behind with vision or well thought strategy and  plan.

The land of the purist  turned to be the most filthy. It was a struggle of an individual helped by his steno supported by a loose group of individuals who had neither knowledge nor vision. Politically dwarf, dropped out  by the school of history with myopic vision. None of them was visionary in his own right but were following a leader.

Those knowing Mr, Jinnah very closely agree on certain characters of his personality. He was honest and hard working but having no streak of democratic thinking. He was blunt and harsh, not ready to listen to suggestions. Personality make up of a person does leave strong impressions on thought process, it was abundantly visible in his conduct of state affairs. The rest were political orphans. The companions of the Quaid were intellectually dishonest.

Jinnah took over as governor general with prime ministerial responsibilities. It was the worst form of centralisation of authority. His followers followed his footsteps without a second thought. Probably they had no capability of thinking or dreaming, if I may say so. Conspiracies, undemocratic culture, despots in different uniforms with same mental make up kept the show running in the name of Islam, national solidarity and Hindu phobia. People were denied the right of vote till 1970, press was gaged and freedom to assembly and speech was crushed with iron fist. The judiciary was the first one to surrender.

The individuals and their uniform changed with time but the mental make up remained the same. Ruthlessly undemocratic and anti- institutional. All means were used to suppress the people by the band of band masters. From physically disabled to schizophrenic ruled the country.

Where we stand today, is not a historical accident but our deeds of the past have led us to this juncture. Having no international standing, bankrupt.. State and government both are failing and the nation is sick.  The masses have been forced by the system to be as corrupt as their masters. Those who claim to be totally honest unluckily did not get a chance. Those who claim to be moralist,  is in fact a middle class morality Incapability to steal or rob is given the name of morality. Clearance loot is going on that brought us to the present sorry state.

Every self proclaimed purist is corrupt and is intolerant according to the status he enjoys  in the society. The system is tailored for corruption. The population is mainly divided in two, vote sellers and vote buyers. The chosen purists instead  legislating, is receiving huge amount for developments but used to bribe the masses. The only employer is the state where the jobs are on sale,  through the touts, to the ever needy purists. Musharaf used to called it democracy from the roots. This rotten system was started by Ayub and reached its zenith during Zia and Musharaf rule.

Democracy has three salient characters. We practice government "by" the people but it is never "for" the people or "of" the people. There is no mechanism to make it work according to the spirit of democracy. The electoral system is tailored to serve the buyers and let the selling community remain the seller of their vote.

I have a gut feeling that  individual awareness is pretty high but the political workers have failed to give it a collective direction. The specie called political workers is disappearing  and being replaced by political qawals, chorus singer. The same applies to the political parties they are most undemocratic in nature. In the name of discipline every dissident voice is choked in the throat before it reaches lips.

Some of the political parties have very short life. What happened from 1947- 1971 sends a electric  wave in the spinal cord of any one with feelings. The rulers were the most barbaric and were enjoying divine status like caliph or messenger. They ruled in the name of Islam, solidarity and  threat from Hindu Bharat. It was strange paradox that numerically there were Muslim in India. It was the darkest period of Pakistan's history. People were killed randomly and tortured to death. But still some people continued the struggle of democracy.

In religious discrimination we have left India for behind. This is the sole aspect of life that we can tell Indians "catch if you can." It is unfortunate that intellectual corruption have compounded the problems. Pakistan is an infectious  syndrome and any part that accept its writ is a new market sectarian killings like. Gilgit and northern areas once the most peaceful area are now the valleys of death. FATA must think twice before taking any step.

The nation is sick. Every stratum of the society is corrupt, dishonest and criminal minded. Not only the institution but the individuals too are unaware of their jurisdiction. The word jurisdiction is a bitter pill, every one refuse to take.

The electoral system needs radical targeted changes. The nation building process should go hand in hand. The system has forced the lower class to accept criminality or they commit crimes on behalf of the higher class. The higher class is genetically corrupt and survives on corruption. Majority of them are those least aware of legislation and master of all possible treacherous dishonesty. If one is a security risk the other is danger to federation. Some chosen went to the house on bike and returned in cars worth millions. To them dishonesty is trick of the trade and the best trade is election with no fear of loss. Carry on cleo game is on.

Arab spring spells over to Saudi Arabia

ARAB SPRING SPILLS OVER TO SAUDI ARABIA.

In American politics, the republican may be classified as orthodox or fundamentalists or conservative. Probably they have some characteristics of each group. But as for as it comes to american national interest there is hardly any difference of state policy irrespective who is in oval office.

The protection of its national or international interests is the clause one in US constitution. It should be that way of every sovereign nation unless it has accepted surrogacy as its state policy. Unfortunately with very small exception most of the Muslim world are in this "honoured" group. The Arab world in particular has been of jugular importance to Americans since long, particularly after the implantation of israel.

As one Russian diplomate told me,  it is the American interest holding Israel back not to sweep Saudi and other gulf states. Because Jews will never sell their oil for 30 dollars a barrel as the Arab sheikhs are doing. This is the only ruling specie that believes "in easy come easy go". A historical comment once passed by the sister of Raza Shah Pehlavi in Montecarlo.

The American in general and the republicans in particular are extremely worried about the spill over of Arab spring to Saudi Arabia. There is a cruel, inhuman, brutal crushing going on in Saudi. Any one suspicious is quickly picked up and urgently disposed off. The friendly Saudi dynasty of Roosevelt is as important to US, as the state of Israel. Both are the corner stones of Americans foreign policy.

Mr. Kofi Annan peace mission expectedly bogged down. The four reasons he gave for the failure of his mission are right in its own place but one might disagree with priority or the order of importance. He is the most respected and learned diplomate but his patience was taxed to the limit.

He squarely blamed the international fraternity for their lack of interest. But in my view it was not the lack of interest of the major players, but was basically a shift of interest. The western powers interest in Syria could hardly match the pyramidal interest of US, lying in Saudi Arabia. Secondly the western powers are looking at Syria in the prism of Saudi ruling dynasty. The loyalty of time tested Saud  dynasty has no alternative for American. The same is true about the royalty of Kuwait and the sheikh of Dubai for UK.

If one of the two has to be sacrificed I feel US will sacrifice Syria without a second thought to save the house of Saud. The most experienced prince Naïf has passed away but every one of this  family has masterly command to deal with their citizens, if they try to be naughty. They have ""head masterly" command of authority.

The structure of the dynasty has been very cleverly and craftily woven, with the advice of the second governor general of Pakistan, Mr. Ghulam Mohammad Mirza, that the chances dissension are reduced to minimum.

The royal family is the offspring of 33 wives. It is a huge house of 3000 male members. The family has been divided in to four main groups according to the nobility of maternal blood. In ascending order they are sahib, Samu, Amir and Malik. Only the last two purist are heir to the crown or eligible for sensitive posts.

The regional and religious discrimination is the undeclared policy of the state. And every possible care is taken that the mischievous are kept away firm the citadel of power. The Najdi are considered more loyal to the Saud house than Hijazi and so are Wahhabi Sunni. Shia is never trusted, even their faith is doubted . The same is true about Iran where the "Momen" are only Shia.

These two fundamentalists states have great influence on the formulation of the foreign policy of US. Added to it, is the security of Israel. It is interesting that all the three parties have a common enemy, Al-Qaeda. The same organisation is enemy no 1 of the west. It smell fishy to see singularity in animosity with diversity in interest of each party.

This hidden common interest had devastating effect on the Syrian uprising. Before it was born it was divided on these lines. The Syrian regimen is the most vicious and brutal supported by vested interest of the local affluent class mostly coming  from the clan of Asad.

In this mirky water Russians are playing their own game to retain a foothold in middle east. The local arm supplier like Iran and Saudi are adding fuel to the fire at the cost inhuman miseries of the Syrians. They are the victims of local fundamentalist and international hegemonists. No one has a sleepless night for poor Syrian but every one is fighting for its own agenda and interest. It is the second Afghanistan where the local states and regional war lords with the backing of the international imperial designer are fighting till last Syrian.

There is no forum where issues of this sort or any other can be raised and discussed just on humanitarian grounds. UNO is an impotent organisation and the presence of veto power has made it irrelevant. It is an international cafeteria where the surrogates are asked to endorse the designs of the Bigs. Occasionally if the endorsement is not forthcoming then the ideology of pre-emptive strike is pursued shamelessly, for the sake of a nobler cause of international peace and democracy.

The Arab spring is being nipped in the bud. The stakes are high. The demographic distribution of petrol and gas has increased the fear of the west, as most of the reserves of the energy are in Shia enclaves. The west is worried of the autocratic clergy of Iran going nuclear or gaining upper hand in the affairs of this sensitive area.

More than democracy it is the geo-strategic location, the sources of energy and the security of Israel that matters to the self proclaimed master minds of world affairs.

The jurists in politics

                                         THE JURISTS IN POLITICS.

In Pakistan nothing is asymmetrical or anomalous. The most unexpected are expected and the most hilarious is taken routinely without surprise. In seventies Air Martial Asghar Khan wrote "generals in politics", it might have been surprising for some outsiders at that time  but not for Pakistani citizens, as F.M Ayub was in politics since the days of shaheed millat and was one of his trusted man for his so called role in Pindi conspiracy.

Now when I decided to write few words about gowns and wigs it was neither surprising for me nor I had the feeling that it will surprise the Pakistani readers. We are immune to these anomalies. Just to justify my endeavour for historical reasons I will quote few out of countless.

The country has been ruled by despots of all shades. Some of them were either physically or mentally unfit. We have seen judiciary abandoning its freedom, taking oath from the abrogator of constitution and inventing the ideology of necessity. No judiciary has condemned any martial law unlawful. Even the present CJ took an oath from a military dictator.

We have seen civilian martial law administrator and had the luck to see a four years old boy, Aimal behind the bars for anti state activity. Many times our public has distributed sweets to welcome martial law. We have masterly command to distort the history to snatch the honour of the first elected prime minister of the country from shaheed Benazir and gave it to her father Z.A.Bhutto who was in fact elected opposition leader.

So it is no wonder if our CJ is in active politics for last one year. His political leaning were obvious from the day one when he was reinstated as CJ but for the last one year he is on the countrywide truth delivering political speeches reminding the parliament and government about their jurisdiction . Jurisdiction is for others to observe or face the contempt of court.

Our Chief of judiciary has superseded our chief of armed forces in forcing the other jurists to fall in lane when it comes to discipline and administration. Our judicial core commanders have shown their exemplary obedience to their chief. His uttered words carry Devine sanctity. But they fail to comprehend that such unanimous thinking reflect their mental calibre. They are insulting their own intellectual wisdom.

The so Moto actions are taken for selected cases irrespective of national interest and so is the selection of cases to be adventurously pursued.  Our CJ has special interest in political issues and day to day cases of public interest are piling up. The justice in the lower courts yet to get the attention of our higher courts. The feathers alike have flocked together. The CJ onslaught is supported by electronic media, the political parties to the right of the centre while army chief has left the pitch to judiciary chief.

The judicial stance towards army establishment is one of extreme caution. They are quietly watching the developing scenario with eagle eye. It reminds me of my days in Saudi Arabia. Once I was visiting colleagues in Aramco, Dhahran, when I saw a board on motorway saying, " the Saudi law ends here." I think our supreme court jurisdiction ends at the gate of GHQ. Country within a country is quite common in third world countries particularly in Muslim countries so no surprise. For reason unknowingly known to us they are sailing in the same boat but the most powerful has turned blind eye to the events. I feel they think that their job is being done by others for them so why to get blame. Previously army used the shoulder of politicians but now they have lost the credibility. Gowns and wigs are better alternative. It is nothing new the previous tract record of judiciary is of the same nature but the despot were civilians.

The election is drawing nearer.  The forces are taking their position. Our partisan free judiciary has jumped in to the field first threatening the parliament and government. The change in the constitution contrary to the spirit to democratic values must be resisted by every one but this is the job of masses and political parties not the jurists to launch the campaign and threat to thwart such a move. There is hardly any institution of the state working in its jurisdiction but to clip the feathers of one and let the others fly high in sky is not understandable to sane mind but in Pakistan not unexpected.

The CJ speech in London was highly political though he came to collect the prize of being a great jurist. Political inclination destroys professionalism. Our fledgling free partisan judiciary lacks professionalism as they surrendered their freedom just after the freedom. The army professionalism deteriorated greatly after 1969. The sectarianism and politicisation destroyed this highly organised and professional institution of our country. Army was a strong institution and the deterioration took years but judiciary is still in infancy it just need a small jolt. I refuse to accept the terminology of judicial activism, it is in fact a judicial adventurism putting at stake the integrity of the country. It is brazenly partisan and highly politicised. There are no alternative words to describe our judiciary character.

The two chiefs with political dwarfs are playing with the destiny of the federation. We know that the devaluation of centralisation of powers has not been accepted mentally by the ruling constituency of Pakistan, The Punjab.

Is there any bigger threat to Pakistan than the insurgency in Baluchistan.? How many missing personnels have been recovered by our judiciary? If not when should we expect the so Moto action against the agencies or issuance of the orders of contempt of court? When the indiscriminate killings in Karachi of poor people will be given the honour to be heard by free judiciary? The blood is asking for attention!

Fear and opportunism are the worst enemies of human values. A nation without established character is no nation. Our collective values have been devalued by all pillars of our successive governments. We are living in a vacuum,  quite remote from realities.

In USA the flaw in the electoral system came to lime light during Mr. Bush and Mondale race. Mondale in spite of bagging majority of the popular vote could not become the president. Mr. Bush was the judicially nominated president in the history of USA who was not elected by masses. It was not their judiciary to debate but their parliament to take up the matter up and decided to retain the undemocratic clause. Their judiciary neither threatened nor took so Moto action. Just for historical reason they retained an undemocratic clause. India was quick to comment that now it should be the other way round we should send election observers to USA for monitoring.

The character demands that till Dr.Arsalan case is decided the CJ should go on leave to establish high moral ground.

Pakistani journalism

Pakistani journalism. The so called independent journalism in Pakistan has created a havoc in the country particularly the electronic anchors. The main reason is illiteracy. The printing media has a reach to educated section of the society, the masses tune their ears to TV. Unfortunately very few anchors deserve to be named as journalist. The rest are paid to create sensationalism by journalistic adventurism. Neither they are bound by a code of conduct and ethics nor they are under oath to speak the truth nothing but the truth. The rabid elephant has no limits or guide lines. Some of them are no more than paid jugglers. The sacred profession is being rapped in the name of free journalism. It is a human nature to abuse any thing that is acquired without struggle and sacrifices. F. M. Ayub took it, Zia gave it back as a gift. Pakistan is sunk in problems and is struggling for survival while all the pillars of the state are fighting for hegemony and diagonally opposite to each other. There is no place to give benefit of doubt to any one. The only change that is visible that the institution yielding power has changed the shoulders, instead of politicians the shoulders of the jurists are being used. With few exception, every one is working for some one. Some of the analysts are members of political parties with rigid ideas. To have political views or affiliation is not a forbidden fruit but to be a spokesman of an organisation is dishonesty in fair journalism. They lack tolerance and if questioned or opposed they blow off their skull and never hesitate to resort to personal attacks. It is self worshipping and forbidden in Islam. The anchors have adopted space saving technique in journalism. They have squeezed the size of Pakistan only to three cities, Islam Abad, Lahore and Karachi. The tip of their nose ends there. They are least aware of the rest of the country. It is inculcated in their mind that intellectualism and wisdom can only grow in these cities. The rest is a barren land good for strategical depth, otherwise of no use. The problem of Khyber pass are discussed by the intellectuals of these three cities. The same treatment is extended to interior Sind, Baluchistan, KPK, and FATA. I presume that since we are dependent on the industrial and agricultural produce of these areas, so in their view for the solution of our own problems we also need the intellect of these areas. Generally called Ashrafia. Their political forums are anti federal, anti democratic and show their contempt for the rest of the country. They are so empty about history that while other nations were toddlers we Pakhtoon had an empire. Our fore fathers did not build glass palaces or tombs in the memory of their beloved but roads and postal system was their contribution. Probably they are following the foot prints of their overseas masters and tagging the human blood with different prices according to race and religion. A drop o human blood is more sacred than the sanctity of holy Kaaba. As human being and Muslim this is our faith. But the coverage given to the rescue of a buffalo from a trench in Punjab receive more coverage than the deaths of human beings in KPK and FATA. About Baluchistan massacre they are mum. The disappearance of the political worker and their tortured dead bodies neither needs TV coverage nor so Moto action. It is highly painful and show the calibre of our self proclaimed intellectuals. Where ever a human blood drops that should be the centre of the universe, irrespective of race, religion, class, creed and colour. The loss of our national status in international community is the result of our inhuman attitude. God deprives those who have no moral value. Before asking others to respect we should learn how to earn respect. Ghamdi is right to say that our sorry state of affair is not due to American or Russians. The cause lie in us we have departed from our religious moral values so the mantle of leadership has been transferred to those fitter than us. God does not give the leadership of humanity to inhuman flock. He is the lord of universe and humanity not only Muslims. We need nation building. The root cause of our political, economical and social ills, lies in the national sickness. We have an identity crisis unless we have a respectable identity we cannot get out of this miss. We are deep down up to our brows in our own created filth. It is the time we have a sensible political forums run by respectable, learned and prejudice free anchors. To me a fail government or state is less important than a sick nation. I was asked by a British diplomat who is journalist also if I can help her in providing informations and suggestions about reorganisation of police in KPK and FATA to make them citizens friendly, provide protection and restore trust of the public. I gladly agreed but told her that she has embarked on a very difficult mission. It is equal to nation building. I am a follower of a Mahatma ( Bacha Khan) but not Mahatma myself. You should start your mission with a clear idea that you are just one of the contributor and not to expect change. KPK police is considered the best out of all but not ideal. I told her she will be shocked if happens to see other provinces. It is also the duty of our locals rich class, who have the resources to think over it that to counter the venom of the adversaries we must have an electronic factory of "Taryaq" . Our rich class must come forward to invest in electronic media..We must uphold our principles, that we will never devalue human values. Self defence is every one's right but not filth slinging. The deeper and long running historical roots of a nation, the richer and calmer is he, like an ocean. The noise of a river shows its shallowness. The taller the mountain the difficult to capture its peak. Mother nature has a lot to teach us but if we have wisdom to think over it. Dr. Khurshid Alam Lelowni, Shangla. Dated 24/7/2012

Pakistan and Punjab ?

Pakistan and Punjab? Pakistan minus Punjab there is no Pakistan. But Pakistan with Punjab is MAHA Punjab. This equation may sound silly to some readers and the others may ignore it to be the simplification of grievous situation prevailing in the country, but this the fact not a fiction. In my humble opinion and little knowledge this is the root cause of all the ills of Pakistan. Let me try to explore the concept. Punjab is a huge constituency and citadel of power or to put it bluntly, a road to Islam Abad. The powerful pillars share this constituency, be it the army establishment, parliament, executive, judiciary or the self proclaimed new pillar the journalists community. From the very inception of Pakistan, Punjab has conceived all powers and is the zamazam of authority. There is a distanced ectopic pregnancy called Karachi, the economical hub of Pakistan. It is a Gaza strip for Pakhtuns under siege by the companions of the founder. Pakistan itself is transplanted country in the globe like Israel. Karachi has been taken a shape since the birth of MQM that even the soil imported from India. The real owners are red Indians. Pakistan is synonymous to individuals and families. Loyalty to them is the pre requisite for patriotism. All the scandals during the last four years ended in "coup d'état by judiciary". By the way the recent one isn't the first one. Molvi Tamizuddin was the first victim of the judiciary. Our judiciary stands tall to be the first one to its surrender it's independence. Justice Kayani was the only one to speak half truth. Choudhri served under an usurper for quite long till he was asked to resign. His refusal was not for the freedom of the judiciary but to save his seat. Our support was for restoration of the judicial independence, not a partisan judiciary. His inner bitterness was intense. He was waiting for the ripe time to hit hard. This was an opportunity he could hardly afford to miss when his son was found to be involved in similar scandal. Pakistan is ruled by two parties one with power the other is show piece. The sixty percent is under gentle brothers and the rest is under PPP led coalition. The big stake holder has started disobedience movement to reclaim the rest. Judiciary and army is staying out and mum, a support by default. Karachi is another Gaza strip plagued by shadows of death. It all stinks foul but the sacred cow cannot be hurt. Establishment home grown gorilla is to be protected, should it be needed in future. Pakistan stands distinctly in the world, in certain regards. It is the only country where the state was residing in individuals and families. Where judiciary surrendered its own independence for petty interests, where the majority was forced to accept the role of minority and the rule of minority, where a civilian was a martial law administrator, where a four years old Mir Wais was held in custody for anti state activities, where the supreme court was attacked and the attacker were let to go, where an air craft that carrying COAS was hijacked by the government, where the PM's were imported who were not even the citizen of Pakistan, where the history is tailored on daily basis? And yes this is the land of pure, where the human and natural capital follows the capitalists and industrialists keeping the international law of economics on ice slab that demands industry to follow the power and man power! The idea of this long introduction was to give the public a glimpse of the back ground and the intrinsic asymmetry in the equation mentioned above. The greater Punjab is not acceptable to small nations any more. Pakistan in its present state is an imbalance state numerically, politically and economically. Pakistan is basically not the need of small nations but the need of Punjab. Unless Punjab accepts this reality and develops an accommodative, all inclusive and participative policy, the existence of the country will always be at stake. Unless a true federation in words and spirit in accordance with the resolution of Pakistan is evolved, the country has no tomorrow! The obstructionist behaviour of Mian brothers to name our province is a strong indication of their mind set that has historical continuity. Those who are ashamed of their history has no place in history, we should not be out of them. Since our defeat at the hands of Ranjeet Singh we have never been able to break the yoke of slavery. Liaquat Bagh firing, the denial to name us, is a continuous process of a particular mind set. There is government sponsored revolt in Punjab if the same would have happened in any other province there would have been so motto action followed by military action. The government sponsored anarchy and the silence of the concern institutions speak volumes. Punjab is screaming hoarse about it's rights. They have the right to do so but if the others does, why it annoys them? Muslim league(N) is the representative of the elites of Punjab and have the right to protect their interest but must stop interfering in other provinces. In the name of federation and integrity of the country, one province should not be the colony of the other. The provinces must have the right of foreign trade. We have yet to forget the wheat crisis. The loan we are forced to take from the centre carries an interest of above 20% percent while we can get it from outside on 4-5 % and the same applies to wheat purchase...and the story of inequality and exploitation continues on and on... Apathy of Muslim world particularly Pakistan.

The apathy of Muslim world and Pakistan in particular. The sorry state faced by muslim countries in general and Pakistan in particular, is a man made chaos abundantly showing our incompetence, inability, lack of knowledge and wisdom. To shrug our shoulders and blame others is the reflection of our defeated mentality. The success story of others is being projected as the reason of our failures. What a silly and self insulting approach. Any one who wants to go to the root causes is considered either a traitor or agent who is creating feelings of uncertainty and disappointment among public, perhaps due to lack of well rounded insight. Let us accept for a while that we owe our miserable state to the conspiracies of our enemies. But we must remember that we are 1.5 billion of the globe population that is one fourth of the total, with one third of natural resources of the world. We have no capability to use either our numerical strength to its full potentials or exploit our natural resources for the social prosperity of our masses and drag them out of the dark of the past to the twilight of twenty first century. We are living in centuries. Those are lucky ones who have seen a glimpse of twentieth century and stepped in to twenty first century. They are exceptions to the rule. What does it show? Is it our pathetic attitude or the conspiracies of the others? Why are we so vulnerable to the conspiracies of others? Why can't we counter their conspiracies? What have we contributed to the humanity at large and to our people in particular? We are being ruled by 49 despots who have disfranchised 1.5 billions population. Does it show our lack of intellect or the conspiracies of our enemies? The big question is, who are our enemies? Why they should have animosity with us? Are we posing any threat to them, socially, educationally, scientifically, intellectually or militarily? Animosity, belligerency, hostility are reactions to a threat. Are we in a state to pose a threat to any one, in any sphere of life? Then who created the enemies? Certainly our masters to divert public opinion. Let us presume the west is responsible for our sorry state. If it is taken for granted then their bellicosity is to our rulers not masses because our masses are not a party in this conflict or game of power. They are under the long boots of their own masters. They have disfranchised the public. They have robbed them of their say and dreams. Our rulers are the drafters of our destiny. And our uneducated and unskilled masses are the day dreamers. The dreamers and drafters have no common aspirations. The masters and slaves are two diagonally opposite camps that provides chance to others to conspire. Once the system gives a say to the slaves and the gulf is obliterated, certainly there will be no space for conspiracies. I don't think that their is an imminent danger of clash of civilisations. Civilisation just does not grow in a vacuum. It requires conducive environment like education, social prosperity, political and economical symmetry. Do we have any? Maximally it could be intra-faith battle but not a clash of civilisation. To me that is also a far distant possibility. Faith dominance needs intellectual depth and organised, socially prosperous society behind it. On that front we are not the leaders but an ignorant flock, unable to convince others by force of logic and wisdom but are being used to terrorise our own people and the world at large. We are used as surrogates army of terror by our enemies. Most of them are in our rank and file working in close liaison with our chosen enemies. We envy the strength of our enemies but lack insight to see our weaknesses. Is there anything in our history to provide logical base to our claim? I feel there is none. The west has emerged in last two hundred years. What do we have to our credit before this period? We were are always at each others throat for the power. The sword has always been the leader of the book. Is it not a historical fact? Is it not the case even today? No intellectually rich and socially prosperous society can be established without the leadership of the book and pen. It is the law of the nature and nature does not change its law for a section of a humanity that has been dehumanised by their own masters. The nature supports the basic principle that the society is for the fittest. Are we remotely fit intellectually, socially or materially? Yes when we were fit in the early days and we shaped the world to our own interests but now if the west is doing, they are the fittest to impose their own global order. Why to grumble why not struggle? It is what the nature dictates and is asking us to practice. We have to have an insight of ourselves. We should not envy the strength of the opposite but to rectify our weaknesses. The law of nature cannot be tailored that the global order belongs to those who are fit for the job. The sick and pathetic cannot be trusted for power by mother-nature. If we are the victim of the world order then who is responsible for the miseries of our own masses? We are being ruled by a band of band masters who are dancing to the tune of others. What is happening to the Arab spring? Who is responsible to the sorry state of Pakistan? We must answer these fundamental questions to make ourselves the fittest and be the masters of our own destiny then we will have the right to dream to have a say in the world order. Islam does not justify a holy war without attaining certain basic requirements. Islam does not allow suicide, be it on national scale or individual level. Islam does not allow us to blow fire from a weaker pitch. Islam teaches us peace and to co exist in peace. Islam should not be used as sand bag by despots and extremists to provide cover to their incompetency and idiocy. The bands of terrorist are the enemies of the humanity. No ism supports fear and terror what to say of Islam? Terror is the enemy of logic and wisdom. It destroys the process of free thinking. Islam starts from,"read in the name of Allah". How can it support the ignorant and illiterate? Despots and incapable are the companions of the evil, sitting in the same boat and share the same mission to destroy the humanity and rob the masses of their dreams. Rogues and robbers must be hit hard to save sanity and humanity. Religion comes for humanity not the vice versa. Being a Pakistani I have nothing against India or USA. The usurper of my national and individual rights is a muslim Pakistani. It applies to every citizen of all Muslims states. It is a shame that we have not a single democratic state or caliphate elected by elected house be it shura or parliament in muslims states. Dr. Khurshid Alam . London 18/6/2012

Discrimination in Pakistan

Discrimination in Pakistan. If I force myself for a while to accept the distorted version of history presented by our intellectuals about the logical background of carving Pakistan from India, so to save muslims minority from Hindu's discrimination and subjugation and secondly that the creation of Pakistan was the result of a democratic struggle by Muslim majority, I would still perplexed my mind, to justify the non democratic rule in Pakistan after independence and the discriminatory policies pursued by our rulers, not only with ethnic and religious minorities but even with Bengali majority comprising 54 % of the population. Naturally questions would crop up in my mind and I have to ask my coincidence that did discrimination and subjugation ended with the proclamation of Pakistan or took a more aggressive, inhuman, resentful and repulsive turn. I honestly feel I have to say that that it took the turn for the worst. The second claim that it was democratic struggle to give birth to Pakistan if not that also fails to hold ground, as it was the demand of a minority not majority. But our rulers could have proved their point by their deeds and attitudes after independence but it was never to be. To our rulers principles had no value compared to power hunger. These were all cooked up ideas for public consumption. A country that was made out of fear of discrimination and subjugation, was ruled by discriminatory and autocratic rulers after independence, disproving their own claim. One could have given them a benefit of doubt, if our history of sixty years could provide any flimsy relevance to lend us support. Alas nothing is there. Our deeds speak louder than our claims. The discriminatory policy was started soon after the birth of Pakistan both on religious and ethnic basis. In early days Pakhtuns were subjected to extremely harsh and inhuman discrimination by Mr. Jinnah and it continued till 1978 with all the might of the government and backed by press and other means of mass informations. The other minority was Baluch, the cousin brothers of Pakhtuns. Their resistance invited five military invasions in last sixty years. Now the young generation have opted for armed struggle as their elders failed to get their historical rights by political means. A strange paradox was observed when the majority was pressed hard to accept the role and rule of the minority or accept at least that the new mathematical concept that 54%=46%. Bengalis refusal to this, led to a blood bath and creation of Bangladesh in 1972. They were punished to oppose the idea of two Muslim states and opted for only one Pakistan and by using their right of ballot. Man made countries are politically acceptable but to establish a nation is un-natural. To make a nation with imported language, culture and leadership is a grossly incompatible and politically asymmetrical thinking. Political integration could be a possibility if the political system is fair and transparent but cultural and historical integration is beyond any logical thinking. The abolition of quota system and replacement by merit is the best system but if there is uniformity in developments and opportunities. Otherwise it will strengthen the present ruling elites and keep the under privileged areas permanently backward. This is equal to apply a fair system for unfair purpose. A person from Behar in india has hardly any thing in common with some one from the rugged mountains of Khyber pass except religion. The denial of the Pakistani rulers to accept the historical and ground realities were and are responsible for the present sorry sate of Pakistan. But experimentation is still being pursued without learning from the past. Their is gross incompatibility between the nations. The hero of one is the aggressor of the other. But their insane pursuit created the crisis of identity. Pakistan is a guinea pig in the hands pseudo scientists and experiments are yet to complete if the guinea pig survive the ordeal. Hindu were hated and hatred was made an integral part of our syllabus to be taught to our children right from primary school. The induction of hatred and fear in the minds of the public was an undeclared policy of the state in the name of the integrity and solidarity of the country. I feel that our mutual one thousand miles long border with India proved to be a blessing in disguise for our rulers to use as a ploy to deny us democratic rights to the people and extend their rule. It is a tool in the hands of particular mind set. We owe our existence to our neighbours. Another front was opened by our state machinery. The sectarian hatred and intolerance was created and systematically preached to divide muslims. Though it was simmering underneath since long but brought to the surface by Zia, who provided state patronisation. He is the god father of sectarian radicalism of the masses and establishment. ISI was used viciously for this heinous and unholy crime against humanity. Pakistan became a womb to hatch and produce the radicalised terrorists. The sects were pitched against each others. No institution was spared. The mosques, imam-bargahs, church, temples, gurdwaras were turned in to slaughter houses. No non-Muslims is safe nor can practice his religious duty without fear. The wild pigs were eliminated by religious fanatics in the name of religion. It may be surprising for some that even animal kingdom is being punished on religious grounds. Now the Shia and Sunni have been pitched against each others to please Saudi. The Sunni have been divided further in to many sects. In broad day light the religious congregation are showered by bullets. A systemic cleansing and target killings of Shia and Sunni is on going phenomenon. But Shia being the minority suffers more. The Wahhabi and others are at each others throat. I have met educated Shia lamenting their decision to migrate from India. They are still remembering the services rendered to them by Hindu community during Ashura processions. While in Pakistan their processions area showered by bullets and mortars. Afghan war has been converted in to sectarian war by our rulers. People are scared to attend Friday and Eids congregation in the mosques. The religious intolerance is manifesting it self in different ways in all aspects of social life. The government and educational institution are being run on this prejudice. It is manifesting itself in different shades but in all aspects of life. It is being conducted side by side with ethnic intolerance. Karachi is a slaughter house for Pakhtuns at the hands of a mafia called MQM. The small community, Kalash in Chitral the most northern district of Pakistan is almost near complete extinction due to this discriminatory attitude. Ms. Lakshan herself a Kalash is running every where to save this historical tribe from extinction. The present target killing and genocide of Hazara Shia sect in Baluchistan is another eye opener phenomenon of the discriminatory policies and religious intolerance. It is un-Islamic and inhuman by all standards. An Ahmadi consultant surgeon in UK told me that his only objection is regarding the competence of the house that gave a religious decision against them. When I asked him for the alternative, he said that a council of religious scholars from across the Muslim world should have been formed to give the verdict. I may not a religious scholar but could see logic behind his opinion and the reason for his bitterness and contempt. He told me sarcastically that our first foreign minister of Pakistan was an Ahmadi, Sir Zafrullah, who was one of the most prominent figure to plead the case of separate home land for Muslims of India with British. When Dr. Abdul Salam won the noble prize, Pakistan jumped in to claim the honour but disclaim him for his religious belief. It was really embarrassing for me. I wonder why is it so difficult for our rulers to grasp this simple fact that the diversity in ethnicity and faith adds beauty to the bouquet of humanity. After all God is the creator and sustainer of whole humanity not only Muslims. And so is the prophet Muhammad,( peace be upon him) is a messenger of God to the mankind. If properly handled and sanity prevails, it is a unity in colourful diversity, which is a source of strength rather a weakness. Discrimination and subjugation in any form, by any one, for any purpose, on any grounds is the most heinous, inhuman, distasteful crime. It is a cancer of humanity. The saner element irrespective of borders should close ranks to fight it. Dr khurshid Alam London. 13/6/2012

Yellow journalism in Pakistan

Yellow Journalism in Pakistan? I speculate that journalism might been conceived at the juncture, when humanity was evolving to collectivism and society formation. It is puzzling to human mind that collectivism and divisionism went side by side. With the growth of human population the number of different societies came in to being, on the basis of whims, wishes and wealth. In other words divisionism was induced by collectivism based on vested interest continuing till today. The journalism was the only way of flow of informations between the tribes. The means might have been different but the aims were the same. Nothing in the world is good or bad in its entirety. It is up to the mind set to apply according to its perceptions. Journalism is no exception. It was journalism that has played a major role in the evolution of humanity. Journalism with intellectualism has brought the society to the present standard. But at the same time journalism with sensationalism and adventurism has inflected unprecedented dents in the body of humanity. It was positive journalism that gave direction to the human evolution, social transformation, flow of information. Generally all over the world but particularly in Pakistan the journalism has always been used to distort history and facts and to spread hatred. Intellectual journalism pulled out the humanity from stone and snow ages. It was the art of journalism to build bridges between vastly scattered societies and maintain human collectivism. But the misuse of this tool with sensationalism provides the bone of contentions in societies. Sometime the matter has been taken for such a long time that the people have forgotten the bone of contention but the relations have remained sour and strained. It was unfortunate like many other aspects the life that neither the political process nor journalism took its roots in Pakistan. The foundation is a must, the vision of subsequent construction can be different . Pakistan came in to existence without the vision of tomorrow. There was an absolute vacuum. Conspiracies and scandalisation was the given the name of politics, sensationalism and dramatisation was named journalism. They were going side by side supplementing each others. There was intellectual apathy or a sort of solidity. Generalised feeling of lassitude and indifference to the status quo. This apathetic attitude has led us to our present sorry state. It seems we are still crawling in the earlier phase of our learning curve. Absoluteness is divinity. Human perception always discuss relativity. I do recognise the services of those intellectual and genuine journalists who sacrificed their lives for true spirit journalism. But they were relatively less in number and killed in dark ally ways. The present day journalism is equipped with most modern weapons that they can make or break the destiny of an individual or a society. Unfortunately the breakers far out numbers the makers. The sensationalists and dramatises are holding the key posts as anchors in electronic and printing media. They have less substance and more spices. Some time they do take refuge in intellectual words but that is no more than intellectual masturbation. The genetically deformed journalism is generally termed yellow journalism and those who practice it are known journalists with jaundiced or barrel shaped vision or could be with no vision at all. This coterie is dominating Pakistan's electronic and printing media. They are anchors but with different function. Anchors are used to provide stability to the ship in a rough sea but our anchors are rocking the boat. Their standard of living, their sphere of influence, their might to malign and their masterly command on sensationalism has left our generals, politicians, and jurists far behind in this unholy marathon race, going on for last sixty odd years. They are self proclaimed fourth pillar of parliamentary system supported by a class of politicians who have no audiences in 180 million population. The talk shows are electronic cafeterias run by electronic taliban entertaining the self proclaimed prophets with no umma. They mislead the listeners at home and making the nation a laughing stock abroad. Talib means seeker. Pakistan is home to Talibans of different kinds. The seeking commodity is wealth, power, nuisance value and anarchy. They are allowed to adopt any name or wear any gown. Our majority of politicians, jurists, generals, molvies, and terrorists belong to the same category. The motto is, create fear, uncertainty and rule to acquire wealth and power. Those who are the beacon of light are melting away like candles in silence. The terror may be physical or intellectual but the damage of the bite is the same to wreck the soul and body. The other three internationally established pillars of parliamentary democracy do encroach on each others domain in Pakistan but not as brazenly as our anchors and journalists. Anything that has no limiting boundaries is devilish in character and evil in actions. Limitless freedom is anarchy and leads to self worshipping and narcism that is prohibited in Islam or any civilised society under any ism. After a long spell of "stable government" in Pakistan under military dictators we have a weak civilian government. Every evening our anchors write its obituary, every dawn disappointment them. It is a weak government but with resilience. It is quite entertaining and no different than organising cockfighting usually organised in the villages. "They share their intellectual wisdom with the nation". Cynical thinks that it is a trick by the journalists to expose the intellectual depth of our leaders, as if they are unexposed. Now it is up to the readers to give them any name they consider fit to reflect them genuinely. And have the right to ask them how do they manage to live beyond their limits? It is beside the point that the three pillars who are under oath to remain in their jurisdiction but violates their oath quite often but unfortunately the self proclaimed fourth is neither under oath nor bound by a code of conduct. This rabid elephant is free, to crush foes or friends. To them there is no difference between them. They have cocooned themselves to karachi, Lahore and Islam Abad. Their Pakistan is limited to this triangle and they are being paid to protect its sovereignty and ideological borders. Their guests are intellectuals are from the "chosen" cities. They are the only institution above accountability. Majority of them are for sale. They are the policemen, jurists to pass verdict, executives to punish and defenders of our porous borders. Our journalist character is the same in sixties. The Vietnam news were black out to please our master. Today our journalists have the same attitude towards middle east. It shows their independence. Mental slaves cannot be freed by legislation. The recent allegations against the son of CJ has been given twist. It is a projected a pre-planned conspiracy and but in the case of PM, his son and Monis Elahi they passed the verdict before the decision of the court. Is it not abuse of the journalism. False or true are irrelevant till investigation and court verdict. But it is enough to expose them more. We must castrate this intellectual dishonesty. Dr. Khurshid Alam. London 12/6/12

Danger to Arab dream

Is Arab spring going yellow before bloom? Hardly a day goes without discussion by political analysts and historians about Arab spring. The students of politics express their fears and hopes. The more it is discussed the more is the diversity in opinion and confusion. " As one Egyptian scholar put it that the end is stretched between the dreamers and the drafters. I unlearn to learn every day. Dawn brings hope and sun set leaves behind despair, reflected in the political horizon of Arab world on daily basis. " Arabs nation is more fragmented than it looks geographically. The division on sectarian, religious and tribal basis has been used mercilessly to replace national unity. International players along with local cronies are at play and inducing fear by every possible means available to them. Egypt is the only country having intellectual depth with resources and ideological organisations. But the masses are sharply divided in two major camps,Muslim brotherhood and liberals. The former has a long history of struggle and with a well organised party apparatus. The majority of populace is liberal but having no organisation and strategy. The electoral success of Muslim brotherhood does not speak of their mass popularity but they had an edge over the others because it was the only organised political forum available on the ground. The Egyptian army like any army establishments of muslim countries, is a highly politicised-fascist force having a big chunk in the economy of the country and a trump card to have a final say. They will resist till last minute for their survival. The liberals and democrats may join hands with the army to counter Muslim brotherhood. It will be extremely unwise to do so. The final show down will be between the public and the army. In my opinion, the victory of public of any shade will be a better option than army. Army must be disarmed politically. It will be too premature to predict. Egyptian revolution is still evolving.I would have better if the Egyptians would have first framed a temporary constitution to ensure peaceful transition of power instead of going for election. I believe they were trapped by the seasoned army generals. The Libyan situation is completely different. It is tribal based society made of the union of two kingdoms. Colonial rule was followed by a long rule by a tyrant. Who has left behind a huge black hole. The small tyrants are still at work. It is a rich country with many aspiring stake holders. They failed to establish a neutral centralised authority and to deliver some fruit of revolution to the masses like eradication of corruption immediately. The post revolution delay to deliver has made me a bit skeptical and hope that sanity prevails, to avert civil war. Yemen and Bahrain uprising were nipped in the bud by Saudi Arab and US jointly to thwart Iran ambitions in Bahrain and Al-Qaeda designs in Yemen. Both were considered equally dangerous to Saudi- American interests. The worst and most dangerous situation prevails in Syria. The regimen brutality, barbarity and beastly character is established beyond any shadow of doubt. The ruling class is in close collaboration with Iran and affluent Christian minority. They have closed ranks against Sunni majority backed by Saudi and Al-Qaeda, each fighting for hegemony. Here the mass uprising has taken the shape of sectarian civil war and so the blood let is continuing. It is the most difficult situation to predict the outcome of the rivalry between three fundamentalist rivals, Saudi, Iran and Al-Qaeda. The big fear has come true it has spilled over to Lebanon, the cafeteria of middle east, with no national outlook but a loosely held sectarian enclaves. The sole exception was Tunisia that has undergone an unexpected peaceful transition of power. It is too early to write on the wall about Arab spring. The evolving process has to take its due course if given chance. But the worrying factor is, if the masses are robbed of this "due time" in the crazy chase for stealing the uprising by fundamentalists for establishing their hegemony, it will be disastrous. It is not an easy time for Arabs. The word democracy is new to them. It's implications and dividends are unknown to the public. They were aware of the power of tyrants but unaware of their own strength. They have yet to compare the power of ballot with bullet. Arabs have not only been deprived of their rights but robbed of their dreams, imaginations and thoughts. Human dignity and national pride has been crushed by ruthless tyrants. Their ears are tuned to the shrieking noise of bullets and were not allowed to tune themselves to the melody of music, love, peace and prosperity. Decades long silence screamed for peace, freedom and prosperity. They deserve full bloom spring with no fear of loosing what they achieved by their blood and let their dreams not go yellow. The political asymmetry and Pakistan?

The political asymmetry in Pakistan? (More fears and little hope) Pakistan is in unimaginable political, economical and social storm. We are not in this situation by an accident or default but have been steered to it by our elites over last sixty years. Every one contributed to the present saddening state, according to his capacity and left the baggage of liabilities and responsibilities to the nation to carry. The contribution may vary quantitatively but no one deserves to be given the benefit of doubt. Logically speaking nothing happens suddenly. Every wrong or right is preceded by a chain of events, if ignored, leads to catastrophe. Our present demands that the truth must be established and regrets must be made public followed by reconciliation and accountability depending on the gravity of the crime. The accountability must not be time bound or a section limited but should be across the board with all fairness. Let me be honest and blunt to put to the readers that present filth cannot be done away by the present bunch, who are the children of historical accidents. Neither they have vision or wisdom to tackle the awful situation. Some analysts believe that the present leadership is the product of the system and can't be expected to rectify. My perception is slightly different. I believe that no system has ever been tried in Pakistan unless we change the meaning of adventurism? There was a total political vacuum after independence. The present asymmetrical political system is the brainchild of our rulers. This vacuum could guarantee their survival and protect their interest. The privileges were privatised and losses were nationalised. The gains belonged to the selected and pains belonged to all and it exists today. This is not possible in a system because the evolution of the system is bound to happen. In vacuum this danger is non-existing. No doubt we had political asymmetry in the genesis of the country but the rest were acquired later on. The asymmetry of the political system replaced logic, the blue blooded made the institutions irrelevant and in our chest-puffery pursuit mafia filled the vacuum. The mafias existed in every stratum of the society, political, religious, social , financial strata. To defeat mafia is not easy. It is a fight against shadows of evils, having support of the axis of devils, disguised in religious robes or political gowns. They are no where but still they are at work everywhere. Political vacuum and dark provides conducive environments for the mafias to grow and gain strength. Every move is so craftily manipulated that they are palpably invisible. The cards of religious and divinity exclusiveness were so cunningly played that created fear and intolerance. We have made a history to change the established rule. Our elites have corrupted the power. We all in our own way have contributed in our capacity. Those who maintained silence gave the approval of the crime by default. A planned sustained political or financial foul play is termed intellectual corruption. It is an unforgivable doctrine of the evils . Impulsive criminals were punished but those with a planned corrupt mentality were left scot free. None of them had the chemistry of fair play. To expect them of symmetrical system would have been an insanity. The nation was subjected to go through a process of self rejection. A sick can be treated and a slave can be freed if they feel, they are sick or slave. We were and are in a state of denial or repentance but not ready to accept that we are sick lot. We criticise others but can't stand criticism. Self criticism is an unheard word. The individuals are known by the country they belong to, but our country was residing in individuals. Loyalty to the individuals was loyalty to the country. Our national character was chest puffery. Any one who was not, didn't get the chance to be. The very electoral system based on the exclusiveness of the common man. Ninety percent of the population has been disfranchised. The vote is a commodity for sale and those who are voted, are dishonest traders. The rules are for fools but in our set up fools made the rules to rob the nation. The political drama had habitual abortions. The economy was based on deplorable principle, the gain is for fews and loss is for all. The history was tailored in such a way to victimise the victims and to show the exit of escape to the criminals. The rhetoric and money was the electoral manifesto. Zia and Musharraf were double dealing dictators as one analyst put it. They were incapable to grasp that their decision to marry both, Washington and terrorists, will ultimately push the country against the wall. To marry a gorilla for the sake of money when the money runs out the gorilla will remain gorilla. When US aim was achieved, the negus of terror, with bags of liabilities will be left behind in AfPak region which, is a permanent threat to our security and sovereignty if there is any? The opportunists tried to be clever. They wanted to keep two wives together in one house, unaware of each other, till the one caught the other in the same bed. We were left with no choice but to shout for our sovereignty, to use it as a sand bag. The rentier country has no sovereignty. The sovereignty is first established on the ground. The rentier ground has neither a sovereign sky nor the right to claim. The sovereignty has many facets and its submission is in entirety. To be sovereign in politics, economy and dreams is the real concept of sovereignty. It is a package deal, not available partially. It follows, all or none law. The two characters lacked vision so badly, they could see the pluses of our geo-strategic position but failed to comprehend the consequences to be surrounded by major powers like China, Russia, India and economically sound Iran. It is the law of nature that only shrubs can grow in the shadows of big trees. The world cannot be held responsible for our false perception of grandeur. Every one is dealt for its capacity and capability, we couldn't claim exception. Our intentions were reflected in our attitudes. Unless we own our mistakes publicly and internationally, we cannot regain the lost national credibility. International diplomatic credibility follows the rules of economics, based on credit scoring system. We must transform the system internally to improve our credibility score abroad. To force one to go and to be replaced by another game was started initially against F.M. Ayub, but the time proved the worthlessness of this one point agenda. We must learn from Arab spring that is going yellow before full bloom. The blood let is still going on. The political vacuum left by despots is still sucking in the human blood. The hopes of the beginning are being diluted by the dark of despair. We must bear in mind that Pakistan is home to many nations unlike Arabs or Bangladesh. The loss of one can be a gain for the other. The possibility of mass uprising, if not impossible is certainly remote. We are a fractured nation on sectarian and ethnic lines. The radicalisation has washed away logic and sanity. The majority of the political parties are regional or sectarian except PPP having a streak of federalism. In this backdrop, there are more chances of anarchy than revolution. The army is stretched beyond limits due to the follies of the two double dealers. There is no one to restore peace, in case anarchy erupts, unless we permit the neighbours to send their fire extinguishers. In the fourteen hundred years history of Muslim umma the mechanism of peaceful transition of power is not there to lead us and give us hope. Let this corrupt civil rule and corrupt electoral process run for a while to educate the masses. Let us hand over the destiny to the nation. The nation may be inexperienced and prone to mistakes but morally not as bankrupt as our elites. The elites are not trust worthy and have miserably failed on several occasion. Though painful but it may be but the only exit available is to trust the public opinion. It may not be the choice of some but it is the compulsion of the history. Dr. Khurshid Alam London 2/6/2012

A country with no tomorrow

A country with no tomorrow? Life without purpose is a period of time but no life. A country with no today has no tomorrow. An institution with no tomorrow has no goal. A person with no dream is a sculpture. A leader with no manifesto is a thug. An organisation with no target is a lost mob. A man without aspirations is a non entity. Knowledge without light is a satanic virtue. Candle without flame is an eclipsed moon. A day having no tomorrow is the last day. A sinner is better than a saint because the sinner has a tomorrow and the later exists only in today. A bullet with no target is, " to whom it may concern." Intolerance to listen is a confession of ignorance. To be lost is better, than to be misdirected. A purpose has priority over need. The run of a mouse is better than the chase of a cat. As mouse is running for life and the cat is chasing its food. If we translate all this in to the political scenario of Pakistan, we will discover ourselves. Self conquering is more difficult than to conquer the world. He who fails to conquer his own self, always point finger to others for failures and can never excel. If we fail to comprehend that the one who is looking in the mirror and cannot see his only saviour, is a fool, ignore him he is asking for disrespect. If we are not respected internationally its because we don't know how to respect ourselves. Demand is made for a commodity not for virtue. Are we not disrespecting ourselves? The struggle to conquer ourselves is basically the struggle to gain respect from others. If we don't care for our lives or if our living is misdirected, why others should care for our death? A misdirected soul is a threat to the universe at large and having no entitlement to be mourned. The only exit available to us, is to learn to live with respect so to earn mourning on our death. No one mourns a threat or disgrace! If Pakistan really believes in its tomorrow they have to stop politicking and formulate a foreign policy that is in conformity with our internal ground facts, reflect the aspirations of the masses and national interests, based on the golden principle, to win friends not enemies. Tomorrow needs friends and the enemies belong to yesterday. No one is an enemy unless proved otherwise. We have lost a lot in creating enemies and has never achieved in enmity, then why to chase this insanity? Pakistan is standing at crucial juncture. Ups and down is a part of life, be it an individual or a country. The shattered economy can be restored. The political instability can be achieved but lost national respect is very difficult to win,it is like a person without an ego. The betrayal of trust or confidence is equal to a political suicide. We commit it quite often and then expect others to rescue us. The present run and chase policy between US and Pakistan is like the mouse and cat game. We are running for our life and they are chasing us for their food. Ours is purpose, theirs is a need. As I said purpose has priority over need. Will it not be logical to show a bit more sanity and flexibility to save our purpose that is at stake? They have the resources and huge buffering capacity and can attain their needs by other means, with a bit more cost but should we play with our survival? It is a rule of a thumb, equality is between equals. The wise person knows his seat in a forum of discussion. It is also generally true that the governments deals with facts and opposition deals with fiction. The first one is an engineer and the later is an architect. The most incompetent government is the one that cannot take unpopular decisions and the most stupid opposition is the who fails to exploit those unpopular decisions. The one is responsible for the survival of the country while the other is in a rush to capture the chair. The false ego will cost us dearly. The killing of our Jawans was a highly regrettable act. They were there to defend our borders. But the act of killing the state is an unthinkable crime. The existence of the country demands the posting of Jawans on borders to defend the country if I am not wrong in my thinking? But our opposition priorities are not understandable. Vital organs of the state have been targeted by terrorists in close collaboration with anti state elements, present in our own ranks and files. May I ask is it priority no 2 to our bosses of the armed forces, opposition leaders and jurists? Which one should take precedence? What is the criterion? Did our politicised jurists in our free judiciary took so motto action when the nerve centres of the state were hit? Did our opposition went for short march? This is a dump of filth is the result of misdirected policies of our rulers in last sixty years. Comparatively the present government might have added a bit more than they were required to, but no Jim can fix this miss in three months. Jim can be a character in a film or drama serial but in reality these are impossibilities. If their love is so boundless in nature for their country and masses what are they waiting for? To save the country and to alleviate the miseries of the public takes the priority over the chair. Is it not equal to fool the people? Give us chair and we will make heaven for you out of the present hell. What an aching heart? Apology or no apology but the ground facts cannot be ignored. Country's survival is at stake. It is no logic if a disabled person break his crutch for his false ego. For quite some time to come we need aid and trade both. It is good for public consumption that we don't need aid but trade. To start trade tomorrow we need aid today, to find our feet. At present there is nothing except terrorism that we can export. All other industries are grinding to halt. Internally the institutions are at each others throat. The electronic Talibans (TV anchors, with very few exceptions) have a soaring business. Can we expect a sensible government or monetary institution to put down in the drain their investments. Sovereignty belongs to those who are mentally sovereign and have no ban on dreams. The sovereignty is first established on the ground. Every sovereign ground has its own sovereign sky. An occupied land has no sovereign air space. Though bitter but it is the fact. We have to construct today to be entitled to aspire for tomorrow. Thos who have tomorrow can talk of trade not aid not the vice versa. Dr. Khurshid Alam. London 28/5/ 2012

THE CRISIS OF IDENTITY OF PAKISTAN. Country is like a body when multiple organs are failing, the medical scientists consider that the patient is critical. The degree of criticality is assessed by scoring system. Similarly in political science the viability and non viability of a state is assessed by taking many parameters in to consideration. The critical score is 8. Pakistan is standing at 9 presently. Another political jolt might lead to a fatal outcome. There is hardly an institution functioning normally. Every institution is squeaking under its own pressure. Zardari is held responsible for all ills of the country. If we look at the situation without any prejudice we will note that there is hardly any political party outside the government, except few non electable. The arch rival of PPP, is ruling 62 percent of the country with no noticeable difference of a better governance. The party of the so called educated middle class urdu speakers, MQM is in the government for last 15 years but have done hardly any thing for the rest of the province except Karachi. During Musharraf rule, MQM was the sole ruler of Karachi and Karachi was "no go"area for others so that they could hide their crimes inflicted on other ethnic communities. Musharraf was patronising. What I mean to say that the alternative is not really in sight. Imran Khan is the only untested player. But cracks are already appearing in PTI. The political passengers from other sinking boats are jumping in to his boat. It is difficult to say that whether they are joining him for their political survival or being sent to hole the new boat. They have certainly confused the young workers of the party. The tussle between Makhdooms has already surfaced in the second biggest show of strength in Karachi. It looks as if Mr. Khan is extinguishing fire with fire. At this juncture the survival of the country is at stake to avoid the sinking of the ship to the bottom of the sea. There is no time for experiments by an inexperienced captain. In last 64 years of our short history we are still debating the genesis of the country. Many questions are bugging the minds of political workers whether the country was created to be a theocratic state or secular republic? The deeper one goes in to the history, the more one sinks in to the ocean of confusion. The speeches of the founding father are in sharp contradictions to each other. His actions are not in conformity with his words to provide us a lead. But the intentions can be judged by attitudes. Mr. Jinnah was not an Islamist by any standard nor he was a democrat. It will be difficult to prove him as freedom fighter but there is no doubt about his honesty or professional competence as a lawyer were established. It is claimed that carving Pakistan from united India was a democratic exercise for the rights of Muslims.. I am afraid it does not hold ground, as it was a demand of a minority not majority. Jinnah subsequent desire to remain in the Indian union was a second thought and a testimony to my observation, but was aborted by Patel and Nehru. His speech to the Muslim community at Palam air port Delhi, and subsequently his speeches in the constituent assembly and then as a governor general of Pakistan on15th august were completely based on secular philosophy and had no streak of two nation theory based on religion. Had he opted not to be in the government and kept himself above politics and focused his attention to put the country on democratic tract, the situation would have been totally different. But it was against his instincts and was holding the seat of governor general and acting as a prime minister. He was the first one to dissolve the constituent assembly. After his sad demise the autocrats and bureaucrats started to run the country on the same pattern. They were the real culprits to derail democracy and to rob the people of their right to vote,to further strengthen their own position they joined hands with the army. This class taught the tricks of the trade to both civilian and military dictators. As one analyst said that the politicians were so naive that the majority had no knowledge, how to take an oath in the assembly? The date of birth of the new state further increases the confusion. It will be surprising for most of the readers that Pakistan came in to being a day before the British relinquished power. The only explanation for celebrating the 14 August as independence day could be that it was the last day of colonial rule, not of our independence. The speeches of the founding father on 11 and 15 August show that the birth record of the state has also been tampered. The more surprising was, that Bengal was not a part of Pakistan in original plan and was supposed to be an independent state. The Bengalis opposed the idea of two Muslim states and opted to join Pakistan. Unaware that they will be punished for the same. The country was put on a track, that was diagonally opposite to the resolution of its creation. Nations were denied their identities and a new identity was imposed that was given status of dogma. No one has so for logically explained the aim behind the creation of a muslim state and nation building on religious basis, leading to the slaughter of a million and millions were displaced, inhuman atrocities and immoral crimes were committed by the fanatics on both sides. It was an obscured reason that being in minority in India they would be deprived to lead their lives according to their religious faith by the Hindu majority. This reason was disproved in Pakistan where the massacre is going on abated on sectarian basis. Logically speaking in united India the fear of Hindu majority would have stemmed down the mushroom growth of different sects, who are at each others throats in Islamic Republic. Another illogical excuse being given that the British took over India from Muslims and handed over to Hindu majority. If that was the case Mr. Jinnah would have not changed his mind at the end to remain in Indian union. Secondly muslims as an umma never ruled India. It was a power struggle between different Muslim dynasties killing each other for the sake of power and hand nothing to do with religion. If the reason was out of love for religion one fails to comprehend the stance of Muslim league not to support khilafat movement in Turkey, while congress extended unwavering support. The change of mind set in Muslim leadership came between 1920-40. It was a struggle for power at the cost of dividing Muslims. The subsequent creation of Bangladesh Desh further sealed this notion. Pakistan is in search of identity, clinging to the history of moguls, Arabs and Afghans, as when it suits them. In this search for identity they lost the direction how to run the country. No vision of destiny led to the impulsive flashes of thoughts. Whims and wishes were translated in to policies. The collective and institutional leadership was replaced by individuals and families. The army was shown the path to enter the political corridors by civil servants. It was made irrelevant, who is in the chair but the important factor was a particular mind set! From physically disabled to mentally retarded, started ruling the country. It is a total dishonesty, particularly of our media, to square the whole blame on PPP. We did not land in this critical state out of blue but the successive rulers are responsible to land us in the present state. We tend to forget our follies. It is beyond my comprehension that at present no one is in opposition but there is no visible difference in the governance, and every one is shouting of fair governance? It makes no sense, why to blame one out of all? Another delusion is a dream of revolution? To me the mass upheaval is a very distant possibility because it is not one nation but union of nations. The gain of one is the loss of the other. It is further divided on sectarian basis. It is the most fragmented nation. Neither their is a revolutionary organisation nor revolutionary leader with program and vision of a better destiny. In such circumstances, if there is mass uprising it will have the worse consequences than Arabs awakening. What are we witnessing in the middle east is frightening? The revolution has yet to yield its desired results there, the process of counter revolution has already started. If in desperation the people rise it will be total anarchy, instead of patchy and sporadic blood let that is already going on at present. The military intervention cannot be totally ruled out. The recent security set backs have bruised the army establishment. But some time an injured wolf is more dangerous than a sleepy lion. The sectarian and political organisations to the right of the centre are paving the way for the old bones to take over. It sends a cold wave in my spine, if army takes over this time it will be a permanent constitutional dictatorship and stamp of a stable government. To dislodge them will not be an easy task. As for as I can visualise as an ordinary political worker that unless this incompetent civilian rule is allowed to run for a while and the electoral college acquire the experience and realise the strength of their vote, nothing can change for better. I see nothing else but a bleak future. Unless sanity prevails in political parties to the right of the centre particularly in sectarian organisations to stop blowing hot, we are heading towards disaster. The economy is sinking and will hit the rock in the bottom, unless political credibility is restored. There is no hope to recover and may end in the sad demise of the state. No nation can survive in isolation. This is an interdependent world and diplomacy is the name of give and take, having no alternative. I am yet to meet an informed person who has has shown optimism about the future of Pakistan, unless the internal stability is restored. It is unfortunate that internal and external policies of the country are hostage to fundamentalists. Their strong ties with terrorists are no secret to the world. The country is in such a fear that no judge is ready to listen to the case of slain governor of the Punjab. The country is being battered for the misdeeds of ISI and these criminals. I will be the last person to find ifs and buts or excuses in support of the incompetence of the present government. But to be honest they have hardly been given a chance to attend to governmental affairs. They are dealing with scandals on daily basis. They are the victims of the politicised jurists who are exercising judicial adventurism in the name of free judiciary and journalists who are electronic Taliban with few exception. Dr.Khurshid Alam. Chicago Conference

Chicago conference? (Hopes and fears) Chicago conference is of extreme importance for peace, at global and regional level. Though basically it is a NATO sponsored conference but the invitation to the general secretary of UNO and Pakistan has increased its importance. It is hoped that It will be a big leap forward towards peace in Afghanistan and a step ahead to curtail terrorism in the region. It will be the first one of its nature that top political and military leadership in NATO will jointly discuss the issue. Had they invited military leadership of Pakistan armed forces that would have been more fruitful, as they are the key holder to the problem and having friendly relations the traders of terror? It is unfortunate that our media, sectarian and some political pundits have ganged up once again to sabotage the peace before it gets off the ground. They are the same forces who sabotaged Geneva peace accord. It was expected as they survive in the state of war and terror. In peace, they visualise the drying of foreign revenues to pursue their aim and threat to loose its nuisance value. It is the irony that US has played a very important role in propping up of these forces in Pakistan and radicalisation of the masses in both countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The radicals have substantial support in the armed forces, civilian establishment and masses. The conference is timed as such that will help Barak Obama in its election, but will strengthen the anti peace axis in Pakistan in the forthcoming elections. I agree with New York times that unless Pakistan army establishment and ISI, completely and openly severe their ties with radicals this war has no conceivable end. The looming threat to peace will persist. The shadows of death and terror will chase the peace and stability in the region and the world at large. In this back ground it was of utmost importance that the military leadership of Pakistan should have been invited along with the chief of the agencies. The civilian government is a lame duck set up. The key to the authority and access to the source of threat is via our military establishment. It is a simple logic that unless the god father is tamed and taken in to confidence nothing concrete can come out of this conference and the blood let will go on unabated. Peace will be always on a run, chased by terror. Pakistani public is a highly emotional flock, any Tom or Dick can play with their emotions when it comes to USA and India, our arch ideological enemies. They are shut to logic and ground realities It is said in political circles that it does not need high degree of intelligence to become the head of the state or government in Pakistan, if one is a good orator who can address a mass rally in Lahore and promise that if voted to power the next day Pakistani flag will be flying on red fort in Delhi and the Americans will be kicked out. It carries more than some truth. Pakistan is the second biggest recipient of US aid after Israel but the majority of population has anti American feelings. US was no two when USSR was on the map. About the alternative they have no clue except some religious rhetoric. They want a sudden shift of foreign policy and dreaming of China, Iran, Russia and Pakistan ganging against US but are unable to comprehend the complications and repercussions of sudden shift of foreign policy while the war is on. They are amnesic to the past that we offered our services to US, before we were requested. The first foreign dignitary, received by Jinnah was the American ambassador. Subsequently it was Liaquat Ali who snubbed the Russians. War or confrontation in any form is very easy to start, difficult to carry and impossible to end. In this diplomatic row the major responsibility is lying on Americans. Being a sole super power they have to be more cautious in the conduct of its foreign policy. They are well aware that their most allied ally is the army establishment of Pakistan. US has heavily invested in the army and in grooming them. They are well aware of the fact that nothing is possible in Pakistan without the approval of the establishment. The recent chain of events like chasing the terrorists in Pakistan, Kerry luger bill and memo scandal has upset the armed forces, and were badly timed. Army reputation of professionalism was badly tarnished. To divert the public opinion they distanced themselves from US. On the other hand these sequence of events further radicalised the Pakistan army and public. Our national tragedy is, we really enjoy authority but have no courage to accept the responsibilities. The responsibility was shifted to the parliament on urgent basis. The parliament and the weak civilian government were used as scape goats. I am totally confused that if this white elephant cannot provide us protection from foreign and internal threats then what is the justification to spend so much on this institution without accountability? It is the joke of the century in Pakistani political frame that the parliament was given this honour to chalk out foreign policy, obviously to shift the responsibility to a beleaguered government. After all till November the Drone attacks were carried from Shamsi air base. We have no solid informations of any hidden written or verbal deal between Musharraf and Pentagon. It was one to one political contact and even the foreign office was reduced to a status of post office or forwarding agency. To implement a ban on transit facilities was a calculated step of anti peace forces. It was easy to implement and difficult to lift giving political advantage to the radicals. Ups and down is a part of any policy but to react impulsively is the most dangerous act. We have no technical know how? Our armed forces total dependence on US is not a secret. To put a ban did we intend to bring the Americans to their knees or were harming ourselves in the long run? If we have good relations with China, we know that China is not in a position to meet our needs and will not sacrifice their most favoured status with US for us. They still need Americans technical know how. Is it not silliness to expect them to put their national interest at stake for our sake and was it logical to earn animosity of US to come further close to China? I am in no delusion that this axis of evils (anti peace gang) in Pakistan that was erected by our army jointly with US and UK will yield to logic. It is a plain fact that we need Americans for our survival, unless the Jim of Pakistan, Imran Khan, use his magical stick and fix all the problems in three months. Jamat Islami considers it a political suicide and pushing the country to the brink of disintegration? Facts must be differentiated from fiction. Leaguers are shaking one hand on the table with Americans but under the table holding tightly the hands of unholy warriors. JI is the planner and the other sectarian organisation have logistic responsibility to provide the gun powder by exploiting poverty and religious sentiments of the teenagers to let the blood flow.
