BACHA KHAN

HOW DO WE LOOK AT BACHA KHAN?

EDUCATIONAL

Khurshidalam44@hotmail.com

To write on Bacha Khan is not a joke. When he was brought from India in coma by a team of seven doctors Prof. Mussarat Shah asked them why they give him so much importance? The question was irrelevant for the occasion, as they were visiting KTH as professionals but one of them replied and I quote,” Madam he is Dewta but born in a wrong place.”

I read the book of Sayel on Bacha khan I must say it is a piece of literature and he has really given the power of speech to his photographs.

Sayel has mentioned many times about his poverty and its effect on his personality but has failed to realize that God almighty has been extremely gracious to him to give him such a tremendous power of expression. Allah says in Quran that he has created all the human beings equally from the same clay. His pocket may be empty but he has a rich mind.

Many books have been written on Bacha khan but in Pashto such a book was the need of the time. He has given tongue to the pictures of Bacha khan. He has undoubtedly succeeded to bring Bacha khan back physically in to the world. His soul is asking us many questions that need answers. And every answer has many questions to be answered.

He has quoted Gibran that if we see a slave sleeping we should not wake him up. He may be dreaming of freedom. Bacha khan comments; “No” wake him up and teach him the real meaning of a freedom showing his extreme love for knowledge.

Youngster often asks me about the philosophy of Bacha khan and I tell them that he was knowledge, action, and truth. He thought one without the other is meaningless.

When he was in our service he was in prisons and now when he is not with us physically we have imprisoned him in frames. He did not have only tongue to speak but his actions; way of life and physical body all had their own tongue. His silence had a tongue. His eyes were telling us about our past and present. His face was an open book to read our future and fears if we fail to act today.

His gaze was showing us the path to the end of our historical journey and at the same time warning us how difficult is the journey?

We are Hippocrates of first rate that we love him and act contrary to his teachings.

We have imprisoned him in frames and we show our loyalty and dedication to his philosophy by wearing a red cap and putting a red handkerchief in our black waistcoat. Was he simply that? If he was why his own people and the rulers were against him? Are we not abusing his philosophy? Are we not cashing him? Are we not torturing his soul? Have we not assumed the role of colonial masters or brown rulers? These are the questions we must asked ourselves if we honestly believe in his teachings? Any thing bears his name is a spot for us to stop and think what is he asking us?

His Markaz should be a university where the real meaning of freedom and abolition of Social evils are taught and should not be a civil secretariat.

His clothes should teach us how to diminish our needs to the minimum possible to get rid of Greed.

His voice is echoing in my ears Kohstania if you succeed to minimize your needs, you will get rid of Greed and will not have the to bow to any one except God. This silly greed is playing with us and making us mentally slaves. Greed is a gateway to Satan to divert us from the service of human beings. Did you understand me? I pray and hope that you understand this in my lifetime? Starve your ambitions and feed your opportunities.

All I would say that we don’t need to be taught but all that we require is to re read ourselves. Does our action in conformity to his teachings?? The values of our society are still the same. We can say he is right but cease to speak he is wrong. We are scared of saying the truth and cheat ourselves. Self-cheating is equal to cheat GOD.

We as a nation need a refresher course of his teachings.

We must activate the education and research center of Bacha khan trust to get the desired results.

It should be so strong to wake up the whole Pakhtoon nation and teach them the real meaning of freedom? The freedom is not only physical but of our conscience.

We should re think that GREED has no limits and needs have a limit. Any limitless desire opens the gate to SATAN to play with us and eat our inner man like a maggot. Our minds and Soul should be wearing his philosophy.

THIS IS WHAT I FEEL IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF BACHA KHAN.

It is my personal opinion that any thing written for public consumption or educative purposes must be in simple language based on understandable logic.

When we write talks or thinks of Khudai khidmatgari it is almost impossible to ignore Bacha Khan teachings and his personal life.

The reason of his unbelievable success in extremely odd circumstances was that he talked to his people in their language and lived with them in their style. He was one of them and they were like him. There was no gap between him and his people.

We must keep this in mind that Khudai Khidmat movement was not just a political one. It was encompassing all aspects of life like Khidmat, fight against Social evils, the way to lead life, to eradicate the deviations in Islamic teachings, to fight against social divisions on the basis of skill, cleansing of inner soul. It was a complete code of life. Politics was one of the many. To put it in his words he was a Muslih and turned politician to save his nation from the barbaric attitude of the colonial Masters.

If we go to Islah-e-Afaghena days he just wanted to educate his people to settle their own problems without going to courts and police.

His Islahi committies was a proof of his mission. It gained such a reputation of fair play and selfless service that the majority of the people turned to them instead of courts to settle their disputes and waste money.

The colonial Masters were very sensitive about any movement in Pakhtoon land because of its close proximity with Russia. They took it as a parallel government and resorted to atrocities.

To fight social division he opened a shop in his own village to counter the thinking that it is a job of Hindu Banya.

To rob the poor by illiterate Mullahs in the event of death or marriage he joined hands with Islamic scholars to bring an end to this social evil.

To fight the pimps of colonial masters he chose to educate the subjugated class and restore their honor to fight back Nawabs and Influential wealthy class.

To educate the people he established a center to create a cadre of all shades that is necessary to run a civil society, from an emissary to a scholar and orator.

To educate himself he established relations with religious scholars of eminence and never missed a political meeting. That was self-learning. To educate his people he established schools, came out with a magazine and started teaching FIQQA in a religious institution at KAKA SAHIB and later became the examiner as well.

He never missed a Friday to speak in mosques about the deviations introduced in Islam and Pakhtoon-Wali by Mullahs and Influential respectively.

Even prior to that he was reading himself in the mirror of his conscientious. He was putting himself in odd circumstances whether he will be able to succeed in his mission or not?

He could foresee the initial resistance of his family particularly his father and the cronies of imperialists who may turn against him. It took him long time.

Once he decided he was not a man to back out. He was made of different minerals. He had faith in GOD and his will to pursue his cause.

It is obscured to say that was against Haji Sahib Turang Zai or Faqir Appi. He was their close ally but had a difference of opinion that no Jihad can be successful without knowledge and organization.

He thought they need more time to educate and organize people.

His point was proved after migration to Afghanistan and returning unsuccessfully.

He had such a power of oratory backed by such a logical approach that he succeeded to convince his father at the age of above 80 to join migration with him to Afghanistan. He told me once, “Kohstania” Afghan Hijrat taught me more than what I learnt in my own life.”

In fact Islahi Afaghena was the period of education.

As I mentioned in one of my article before that right from Mir Wais Nika till today Bacha Khan was the only person to realize that to dream of nationhood and freedom without knowledge is the dream of insane. He used to stress on it that it was the lack of knowledge that in spite of ruling India for two hundred years and Kashmir for 900 years we have left no cultural or historical impact on that land rather we have forgotten our language and culture. It is really a historical paradox that the rulers have adopted the language and culture of the be-ruled.

Another person in our history was Ghazi Amanullah Khan. The Mullahs were against him too. The clergy has always played a very negative rule in the history of Pakhtoon. The Khudai Khidmat-Gar movement was basically the organizational cum political phase while the Islahi Afghania was educative phase as I said earlier.

Bacha khan was of the strong opinion that the two are intertwined. One without other is non- starter.

He further stressed his point that to acquire it one must have a center, which should work as an institution of learning and training. One day when I asked him that if he can tell me of his political mistakes he replied smilingly. Many, didn’t I tell you that I was not a politician but a MUSLIH?

I wanted to educate my people and to serve them. But there are two big mistakes that I regret. First one, I could not establish an institution like Gandhi. Second was my blind trust in Congress. They have thrown us to the wolves. Gandhi G may be given a benefit of doubt but Nehru and Patel did not abide by their words.

THE THIRD PHASE:

The proclamation of Pakistan:

It will be naïve on our part that if we neglect the objective conditions after proclamation of Pakistan.

To simplify for public, the following were the main reasons of our decline. We were handed over by British and Indian Congress to Pakistan. Bacha Khan lamented that Jinnah and Gandhi got freedom on 14th and 15th respectively and we were thrown to the WOLVES.

WHAT THE WOLVES DID?

The punishment of dreaming of freedom was started

- The referendum was held on the division of India but the punishment was given to Khudai Khidmat Gars.

_ Our leadership was kept out of political mainstream from 1947 till the round table conference of Ayub Khan.

- Jinnah dismissed our elected government with two third majorities. It will be interesting for the readers that there were few paradoxes in his this decision.

1) That the referendum was on the division of India; not on provincial government.

2) The governor neither recommended it nor the Khudai Khidmatgar had lost the majority in the house.

3) It will be interesting to note that when our British governor received instructions from Mohammad Ali Jinnah he was shocked by this unconstitutional decision and is not related in any way to referendum.

4) He begged according to common wealth library record but he was asked to obey orders.

Of course the boycott was accepting the division by default and was a big political mistake. Wali Baba told me very frankly that he really regrets this decision.

5) To dislodge a setting government it is a must that the two third to vote against the notion and the notion in this case was the division of India not the provincial government.

6) In the words of Bacha khan, on 14th august Jinnah got independence and on 15th august Indian Congress but we were thrown to the wolves (ref. Thrown to the Wolves)

7) Sardaryab Markaz was destroyed, bombarded and confiscated in the name of provincial government for a silly reason that Khudai Khidmat –Gar leaders have refused to salute the flag of Pakistan.

8) Most of the people believed it. No one would listen to Bacha Khan but thanks to the advances in technology that revealed the truth of Bacha khan.

9) Now any body can see on the screen of Pakistan TV that it was the flag of Muslim League wavering on governor house at that time. Those who have not observed are requested to observe on 14th august on TV.

10) Sardaryab Markaz land was later on confiscated in the name of federal government by Late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, for the simple reason that in case nationalist comes in power in the province it will be out of jurisdiction for them to undo it.

In thousands of Khudai Khidmat gars were pushed behind the bars. Many of them had no chance to see the Post British Islamic republic of Pakistan as their dead bodies were brought out. Lucky they were.

11) Bacha khan was not ready to abandon his struggle. He did not care. To him faith was a battle. He joined with G.M.Sayed, Khan Shaheed (Pakhtoon Wror) Baloch nationalist and Mian Iftikhar from Punjab to form the first opposition party in Pakistan.

I do appreciate the struggle of Late Z.A.Bhutto to rise against a dictator but my only request would be not to distort the history. Our fore fathers fought against those who were undeclared prophets.

11) The struggle of democracy did not start during Ayub time; it was from the day one of Pakistan proclamation. The struggle of freedom was turned in to struggle of democracy. It will be an insult to those who fought and laid down their lives for human dignity and democracy. It is still going on to establish and strengthen it.

I personally believe that a corrupt politician is better than a Despot because the later does not allow his replacement to grow. I feel that is the reason of crisis of survival of Pakistan.

Our pre independence schools were shut, press were gagged. Our leaders and party workers were either in prison or in hidings.

Present ANP started as people party of Pakistan, N.A.P, NDP and now ANP.

12) It will be unfair to compare it with Khudai Khidmat Gar. We must appreciate difference between a civil and uncivilized enemy.

13) I beg to use the word enemy but I am yet to see palpable and visible difference except complexion. The religion did not play a role. Islam was abused.

I do agree that the Khudai Khidmat Gar had a visible enemy but at the same time the density of darkness of slavery and illiteracy were the horrifying hurdles. But let me dare to ask is there any noticeable difference?

Wali Baba was asked in Beach Luxury Hotel, Karachi by the reporter of Nawa-e- Waqt in 1965 that why Ajab khan Afridi does not want to return since the British have gone.

Wali Baba tried to avoid the question twice but on third third time he replied because he has not seen any difference except complexion of the rulers. Is it not the real case compromise apart?

ANP is the continuation of Khudai Khidmat Gar. Simply speaking no body has claimed the continuity; no one has provided better alternative, no one has been criticized more than ANP.

Our generation has failed to provide the cadre necessary for a national responsibility. When we are being blamed for deficiencies then we have the justified to claim that ANP is the only heir of Khudai Khidmat Gar. We do accept weaknesses but refused to give up.

The present leadership has proved its worth. What we could not achieve politically in last 60 years they have achieved in 3 years.

“But it is a shelter for a night not the end of journey?”

They could have done better if we would have provided the required spare parts at all levels and given mandate like Muhajir give it to MQM.

There is nothing to be shy of qualitatively deficiencies, we have not done well but on political side our leadership has not surrendered any thing to any body in spite of a weak mandate.

The qualitative decline is because we have failed to educate our masses to produce better and honest leadership at gross roots.

When some section expects Asfandiyar Wali to kill a lion for them they should provide him a rifle not catapult. This is what they used to say about Wali Baba. Their sanity is in question.

Did we gave him mandate like the Punjabis’ gave it to Mian Brothers or Muhajir gave it to MQM. We should learn to offer ourselves to historical accountability before subjecting leadership to accountability.

The leadership has proved its political acumen by using the pitch of others to gain politically for us. I do not advocate at all that we have no weaknesses but the main reason of our failures is that we have failed to educate our people and reorganize our rank and file.

Without mass education and dedicated workers leaders can do very little still they achieved a lot.

Some quarters are spreading the rumors’ about Asfandiyar Wali whereabouts? He is very much with us when needed but it is illogical to allow a General to fight on the front line as one of my comrades told me. I have personally been in ARMY the commanding officer is always some where in a bunker in the rear?

It is obscured question posed by politically dying coterie of some political leaders. It is the same old tactics used against Bacha khan that the cronies of colonial master used to find political life in criticizing him.

They have nothing of their own to offer to the nation and thrive on these tactics. They are living in a political vacuum.

I wonder why they fail to see Asfandiyar’s younger sister Prof. Gulalai who has been asked not to practice Medicine or teach. Certain people have to be protected, as they are the need of History and Time.

The gulf between the people and their Leader is the doing of those who made our mother land a dump of GUN POWDER. They are responsible to the history for putting their own house on fire.

The youngster must rise to the occasion to expose those who put our motherland on fire on both sides of Durand line.

Khudai Khidmat Gar and ANP.

An educational review and a Point of View

Dated 30 April 2011
